I often refer to Pola Henderson of Jetting Around as my first Internet friend. We connected on Twitter and commented on each other’s blogs. Eventually, we became Facebook friends, met in real life at TBEX, and our friendship just bloomed from there. I love following her adventures around the world throughout the six years we’ve known each other.
Pola is the founder of Jetting Around, a blog dedicated to city travel (est. 2010). Pola grew up in Krakow, lived in North Africa and Chicago, and is currently based in Paris. Her writing credits include CNN, MasterCard, Expedia, and Yahoo. In addition to writing, Pola hosts a weekly urban travel discussion on Twitter called #JAchat, networking events for travelers, JA Café: Travel Talk Over Coffee, and JAM Session performances showcasing international artists.
I know it’s hard to narrow down, but what are your three favorite places in the world?
Number one is Paris, my soul city. I knew when I first saw it in 2007 that visiting would not be enough, but moving to Paris wasn’t an option until recently. So grateful to call it home now. My hometown Krakow is a close second. I love its artistic vibe (especially live theater), underground pubs in the Old Town, and the huge Main Square with Renaissance architecture. Chicago, where I spent the past 13 years, is another favorite. It has a spectacular skyline, people-friendly lake shore, great jazz and blues clubs. It’s a major sports town too, always a plus for me.
What was the first trip you remember?
A flight from Warsaw to Baghdad, when I was about three years old. It was a family trip to see dad, who worked on an engineering assignment in Iraq. Sitting on that plane is my earliest memory, surreal at times.
Based on food alone, which country could you live in forever?
Mexico! I could happily live on tacos.
If you could only explore one continent for the rest of your life, which one would you pick and why?
I’d like to visit every country in South America and do more road trips in the Andes. I enjoy the Latin American culture, especially music and dance. Once I even thought about living in Buenos Aires.
One place you’re hoping to visit this year. Why?
Cuba, now’s the time.
Share your best travel tip.
Stay calm, no matter what happens. Things will not always go as planned, and that’s ok, that’s part of the adventure. I always remind myself that I’m fortunate to travel.
How do you keep in shape and stay healthy while on the road? Do you have advice for others?
I walk a ton, keep hydrated, and try to get enough sleep. I do travel to eat, but make sure to control myself (or walk more, haha…).
What is your favorite mode of transportation? Why?
Airplane! I named my blog ‘Jetting Around’ for a reason. I’ve been fascinated by aviation since that first flight with my family.
Why do you travel?
It’s a combination of curiosity about the world and the possibilities travel brings. When you’re on the road, you forget about your cares and live in the moment. Travel recharges my batteries.
What advice would you give to people who want to travel solo but are too afraid?
Read blogs by people who have done it. Even though we live in a messed up world, it’s still full of good people and there’s no need to be afraid. Use common sense, but go see the world.
