Looking Back on 2015 Through Instagram

Recap of the year through instagram

Looking Back on 2015 Through Instagram

Instagram continues to be one of my favorite social media outlets, as I can share so much with just one photo. In a year that started out working on myself at home to braving the woods for my first backpacking trip, eventually quitting my job, finding myself driving across the United States, and heading to India for seven weeks, I can hardly make sense of how I got to where I am.

Looking Back on 2015 Through Instagram

Even though I am still trying to figure out all of it, I know that I made the right decision, even if it wasn’t the easiest one. Now I’m looking back on the memories I made, and it’s hard to believe so much has happened, especially in the final five months of the year.

Looking back on Instagram has been fun for me, and I wanted to share the experience with all of you. Of course, not every single photo was included, but I made sure that my favorites were. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.Β Without further ado, here’s my recap of the year through Instagram:

January

January was pretty busy. I continued my aerial yoga practice, which inspired me to eventually get my yoga teacher certification. My best friend had a baby, and the addition of Francesca into my world has given me a big reason to come home from my travels, and someone to write post cards to when I’m on the road. She’s been able to add quite a lot of them to her collection in 2015, and I can’t wait to send her more from my future travels. I also took two weekend trips: one up to Connecticut with college friends and another to Saugerties with my mom. Then, I ended the month with a juice cleanse to kick start a healthy year.

Worked so hard to get this move down. Feels so good to finally get it! #aerial #newtricks #sukha #weee #squeezeyabutt #sukhalove #takemypicture

February

In 2015, I got out of my comfort zone in a whole new way. By joining forces with Fluent City, I made several talks about travel blogging. This was my first, and while it took some courage to get up there, I felt right at home in this position. Look for more workshops like it in 2016, I have a few exciting surprises up my sleeve.

March

At this point in the year, I wasn’t doing any traveling and missed the feeling of being on the road. Aerial helped me get through it though, and the sacrifice was worth it, as I was eventually able to leave my job in the summer.

April

My second Fluent City talk was at the stunning Albertine Books, which is located in the French Embassy. It felt like a dream, and it was when I realized that this was the path I wanted to take in my life. I focused on growing in many different areas, especially as a writer. In order to do this, I read plenty of books and wrote a lot. Not all of it I can use, but I did manage to finish my first children’s book, which was a big step this year. Spring was also a welcome change to a freezing cold winter; beauty was all around.

May

This year had its trying moments, but I always tried to keep my thoughts positive and happy, no matter what came my way.

June

June was full of fun with a weekend in Manhattan with my friend, Erin and a road trip to Rhode Island for a wedding with my mom. Then, I decided to test my limits by participating in a Spartan Race, which was something I never expected myself to do. It was tough, but I managed to finish thanks to the support of my friends.

July

In July, I took a trip that changed my life. I backpacked for five days and completed fifty-five miles on the Appalachian Trail. Before I embarked on the adventure, I was a mess emotionally. I was torn between quitting my job or giving it another year, and on the trail, I made the difficult decision to leave my job behind for the unknown. This decision angered and upset a lot of people, but ultimately, it was the best decision I have ever made. Waiting another year wouldn’t have cut it, and I would have been delaying the inevitable. I still don’t have it all figured out, but the months since then have been an amazing adventure. I don’t regret a single moment, as it set the tone for the last few months of the year, which wound up being some of the best I’ve ever had.

August

In August, I took a trip up to the Adirondacks and Northern New York with several other bloggers. It was full of adventure, the great outdoors, and a lot of drinking. It was the first trip I took since quitting my job, and it made me realize that I had made the right decision.

September

Then, in September, I drove across The United States with my friend, Christy. The first day of the trip was Labor Day, which made it interesting, as I wasn’t heading back to work. It was the perfect way to start the new chapter in my life. I also realized just how beautiful my own country was and gained an appreciation for it that I hadn’t previously had.

I’d be lying if I said I didn’t miss the open road. Sure, it was exhausting, but waking up to the unknown each day was exhilarating. We were so lucky to have great driving conditions and weather during our trip, which made it easy to appreciate the beauty that continued to surround and surprise us. This was somewhere in Wyoming near the Grand Tetons, the changing leaves were my favorite part. #crosscountry #roadtrip #latergram #wyoming #usa #america #openroad #bbctravel #tlpicks #travelstoke #travelvibes #autumn #changingleaves #fall #mytravelgram #mytinyatlas #wanderingxc #nature #view #naturelovers #nature_perfection #wanderlust #beauty #wanderingsoul #travelgram #instago #instatravel #yahootravelexplorers #seetheworld #traveltheworld Β  A photo posted by Erin 🌍 The World Wanderer (@theworldwanderer) on

October

In October, I was pretty busy. First, I headed down to Atlanta for SIT Sum, a social media conference, then I spent two weeks working on the business aspects of The World Wanderer, so I would be able to spend 2016 growing it into what I want it to be. At the end of the month, I headed to San Diego for one of my best friend’s weddings. I ate a lot of delicious food, drank great beers, and had a beautiful time exploring the Californian city. Then, at the very end of the month, I finally arrived in India.

On The World Wanderer’s 5th birthday, I’m feeling extra grateful for where it’s brought me. My office can be anywhere in the world! Yesterday, it was a coffee shop in Brooklyn and today, it was @ledistrict near Manhattan’s Battery Park. This is what I’ve always wanted and it feels so good to be living my dream. Not every moment is enjoyable or fulfilling, but these past two days have been wonderful and inspiring. I know I made the right decision, and I love that so many exciting moments are happening around the five year mark. Β  After a long travel day, which included a fourteen hour plane ride, then a six hour car ride, and midnight stop on the road for the best chai I have ever had, I have finally arrived in Rishikesh, India, my first stop of this trip. Here, I will spend a month getting certified to teach yoga, something I’ve dreamed about for a long time. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be here to discover not only India, but also to rediscover myself. I’m here to grow, learn, and test my limits, now is as good a time as any. Can’t wait to share this journey with you all! November

I spent all of November in Rishikesh, India at Rishikesh Yog Dham getting my 200 hour yoga teacher certification. It was easily the best month of my year, and a breath of fresh air after all I had been through. I was able to focus on growing and improving myself, while exploring India and making new friends. On the last day of the year, I got to visit the Taj Mahal.

Β  Day two of yoga teacher training is complete, and I’m realizing just how hard my body has been working. Two yoga classes a day, both an hour and a half each, on top of meditation, philosophy, and anatomy classes, can really take its toll on you. But, I love the group I am with, my teachers, and the experience. I am not sure I’ve ever been worked so hard physically, but it’s so nice to have the proper training and really learn all that yoga involves. For the first time since I’ve been here, I didn’t leave the school at all today, so this is another photo from yesterday. This is the view from the Beatles Cafe, which is similar to my sunset view on my first night here. I’m so grateful to be able to practice yoga here in beautiful Rishikesh. #travelstoke #tlpicks #motherganga #travelvibes #river #Rishikesh #view #beautifulview #instago #india #incredibleindia #instaindia #igdaily #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #traveler #traveling #nature #ganges #gangesriver #instatravel #instapassport #yahootravelexplorers #yogateachertraining #grateful #bbctravel #gratitude #latergram Β  A photo posted by Erin 🌍 The World Wanderer (@theworldwanderer) on

Lakshman Jhula is Rishikesh’s famous bridge. It spans 450 feet across the Ganges and can be a little hectic to cross thanks to the monkeys, cows, motorbikes, and people taking selfies (of course, I was one of them!). Still, it offers one of the best views around and is quite beautiful in its own way too. I took this photo yesterday from the entrance to a local cafe. Today, I didn’t wander quite as far, and I’m grateful because tonight’s yoga practice was quite intense. Each day, it gets more difficult but also easier. They push us to go further than we would on our own, but never past our limits. I’ve realized that I’ve never worked so hard for something I’ve wanted before and that feels really good. I want this more than I’ve wanted anything in a long time, and that makes the painful and difficult moments easy to work through. #yogateachertraining #Rishikesh #river #gangesriver #ganges #bridge #suspensionbridge #lakshmanjhula #namaste #thankful #livingmydream #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #tlpicks #yahootravelexplorers #passionpassport #traveltheworld #seetheworld #nature #india #instaindia #incredibleindia #instago #travelgram #worldwanderer #travelvibes #travelstoke #traveling #reflection #goals

Something I’ve been thinking about today is that in the West, we tend to treat our problems, rather than preventing them in the first place. Here, it’s about staying healthy from the start by focusing on the mind, body, and soul. My anatomy classes have been invaluable in reminding me to think about what I put inside my body and the importance of eating mindfully. The vegetarian diet, plus three hours of yoga and a disciplined schedule have made me feel revitalized and energized each day. Our body truly is our temple, and it’s so important that we treat it right each and every single day. #yogateachertraining #lotus #travelstoke #passionpassport #health #mindbodysoul #healthy #travelgram #temple #yoga #igdaily #india #instago #igtravel #incredibleindia #india #rishikesh #mindfulness #meditation #healthyliving #foodforthought #travelvibes #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #instaindia #namaste

Β  Just hanging out in Camatkarasana. Hard to believe we only have one and a half weeks left of this course. I have loved watching my body change and my confidence grow. I finally have my headstand and almost my forearm balance. So many positions I never imagined myself getting are becoming easier. I don’t want this course to end, and I hope I can keep up with my practice when I return home. After today, I only have three more days left in Rishikesh. A month has flown by, and I am going to miss each and every moment of this experience. Here, I have constantly been in the present moment surrounded by positivity. Thinking about trying to bring what I’ve learned here into my every day life is scary, especially without the support of the people I’ve gone through this experience with. Having the same like-minded people in my life each day, to help guide and support me, has been one of my favorite aspects of this course. As excited as I am to officially be a yoga teacher after Saturday’s graduation, I’m not quite ready to let go of this experience. It’s been about so much more than just yoga. Still, I’m grateful for this opportunity and the way I’ve been transformed during my time here. #view #rishikesh #india #igtravel #incredibleindia #yogateachertraining #instaindia #colorsofindia #travelgram #travelstoke #mytravelgram #mytinyatlas #thoughts #reflections #mountains #himalayas #travellove #travelvibes #transformation #changes #growth #tlpicks #gratitude #thankful #myview #beautiful #naturelovers #yahootravelexplorers

Yoga is a very personal journey, but it helps to have friends along with you to push you even further. When I booked my YTT training in India, I didn’t expect to meet such wonderful people, but I’ve been so blessed to have an amazing group of people with me on this journey. Β  Well, it’s official: I’m a yoga teacher! This month has completely transformed who I am, and the certificate can’t even begin to describe the journey I’ve taken. There were tough moments, but for the most part, I couldn’t have been happier during my time in Rishikesh. I’ve made friends who I know I’ll have forever, cleaned up my yoga asanas, learned how to breathe, discovered more about the body, become a vegetarian, pushed myself beyond my limits, mastered asanas I was previously afraid of (headstand!), studied philosophy, shopped (a lot), drank as much chai as I could, and overall had one of the best months of my life. It’s time to say goodbye to the Indian town that has become my home over the past month and worked its way into my heart forever. Rishikesh is a magical town and the perfect place for yoga teacher certification. There are so many options to explore yourself, grow, and learn, and it would be easy to spend a few months here picking up different skills. I know without a doubt, I will make my way back to this gorgeous little Himalayan town. Now, I’m off on a little adventure before heading to Bangalore in a few days. #yogateachertraining #yogateacher #rishikesh #lakshmanjhula #igtravel #mytinyatlas #seetheworld #traveltheworld #igtravel #igdaily #india #bridge #incredibleindia #colorsofindia #journey #newpath #changes #grateful #bbctravel #yahootravelexplorers #tlpicks #travelgram #mytravelgram #ganga #gangesriver #travellove #travelvibes #instago #instapassport #passionpassport

December

This month was full of excitement, as I headed to Bangalore to volunteer with Leave UR Mark. While there, I got to also visit Mysore and Hampi. I made more new friends and spent my 31st birthday in India. Then, I came home to a surprise party to celebrate my birthday and welcome me home and was able to spend the holidays with my family. For New Year’s Eve, I headed to Ananda Ashram in upstate New York to keep up with my yoga and meditation practice.

Spent the afternoon with the sweetest boys in the world. We danced, played Uno and Carom (an Indian game I thankfully learned how to play in Rishikesh), took a ton of photos, and did some yoga, which solidified the fact that I want to teach yoga to children. The boys range from six to nineteen and were street children before they were taken in by the shelter. They’ve already made their way into my heart and luckily, I get to spend all of next week with them. @leaveurmarkindia #volunteer #volunteerabroad #india #kids #passionpassport #travelgram #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #travelling #bangalore #children #igdaily #instago #instaindia #igtravel #leaveurmark #travel #travellove #travelvibes #yahootravelexplorers #travelstoke #bbctravel #tlpicks #traveldiaries #instakids #volunteering #peace #happiness

Β  One of my favorite places from yesterday was Mysore Palace. It was the residential palace of the Wodeyars, the Maharajas of Mysore, who ruled from 1350-1950. The inside of the palace is stunning with high ceilings that are adorned with stained glass, large halls with elaborately painted columns and arches, and frescos documenting important events of the royal family. I’ve been to many castles and palaces in my travels, but if I was able to pick one to live in, this would be it. #travel #mysore #mytinyatlas #mysorepalace #palace #royal #bbctravel #tlpicks #yahootravelexplorers #beautiful #colorsofindia #incredibleindia #instago #instaindia #igdaily #igtravel #india #leaveurmark #myview #passionpassport #flowers #garden #worldwanderer #travelgram #travellove #travelstoke #travelvibes #southernindia Β  A photo posted by Erin 🌍 The World Wanderer (@theworldwanderer) on

When I set out on my journey to India, I knew it was going to be a special trip, as India has been a love of mine for years, but actually seeing my dream come to fruition has been extraordinary. From my yoga studies in the north to volunteering in the south, I have seen many sides of the country, but have barely even scratched the surface of all India has to offer, and I’m already planning to return. I’m grateful for each and every moment and experience, especially the incredibly warm people I met on this adventure. India, you are beautiful. Thank you for your light and love. Β  “See the world. It’s more fantastic than any dream made or paid for in factories. Ask for no guarantees, ask for no security.” Ray Bradbury ——————————————–As the days before Christmas come upon us, shoppers are filling the mall, delivery men are dropping off packages, and every e-mail includes the hottest gifts of the season. But, what people should really be asking for this year is travel. To see the world and experience it from a different lens. To understand people and cultures different than our own. To learn history by standing in the places it happened. That is the only gift people really need. By seeing the world and getting out of our comfort zones, we become the best version of ourselves. I can hardly believe I’ve been home from India for one week already. Being home has been wonderful, especially with the excitement of the Christmas season and spending time with my family and friends. Still, India worked its way into my heart and won’t let go – I’m already hoping to go back in 2016. I miss waking up early and watching the sun rise over the Himalayas, practicing yoga with an incredible view, the constant sounds of celebrations, the air that smelled of incense, and so much more. This year, though difficult at times, was easily one of the best in my life. I’m grateful for the good, as well as the bad, because all that I experienced has enabled me to grow in some way, shape, or form. I am stronger than I was twelve months ago and happier too.

In 2015, I managed to uproot my life completely and make a change by going after what my heart wanted. As I look back, I can barely recognize the person I was, and I think that’s a clear sign of growth. I’m hoping 2016 is equally as gratifying, I have a feeling it will be.

Spread the love
