India Through Instagram

Instagram has quickly become my favorite social media platform, as it allows me to tell my story through a moment captured in time. While traveling through India, I didn’t have time to write, as I was completely overwhelmed with my yoga studies. However, I made sure to document each day with a photo on Instagram. Through this, I was able to capture my transformation over the course of a month. Even after I left Rishikesh, I continued to grow and transform.

India, for me, was always a special destination, and capturing the country through Instagram was the best way to share what I was experiencing. My seven weeks were nothing short of magical, and the easiest way to show that was through photos.

Below, I’ve compiled my favorite Instagram photos from the trip for you to enjoy. It was hard to narrow it down, but these are the ones I love the most and that make me smile when I look back at them.

After a long travel day, which included a fourteen hour plane ride, then a six hour car ride, and midnight stop on the road for the best chai I have ever had, I have finally arrived in Rishikesh, India, my first stop of this trip. Here, I will spend a month getting certified to teach yoga, something I've dreamed about for a long time. Words cannot describe how excited I am to be here to discover not only India, but also to rediscover myself. I'm here to grow, learn, and test my limits, now is as good a time as any. Can't wait to share this journey with you all! This is the view from my back balcony. #yoga #travel #travelstoke #travelgram #mytinyatlas #view #india #Rishikesh #travelblogger #traveler #passionpassport #tlpicks #travelvibes #yogateachertraining #beautiful #instago #instatravel #instapassport #igers #worldwanderer #yahootravelexplorers #bbctravel #instaindia #rishikeshyogdham

Ate vegetable curry with roti while watching the sun set over the Ganges River. It's such a beautiful color blue and the surrounding mountains made the scene even more beautiful than the photo can show you. I spent my day wandering the streets of town and relaxing before yoga starts on Monday. This view was the perfect ending to my first day in India. Also, I survived my first motorbike ride! #instaindia #bbctravel #sunset #ganges #gangesriver #yahootravelexplorers #worldwanderer #india #rishikesh #view #myview #travelgram #travelstoke #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #instago #seetheworld #instapassport #traveltheworld #myhomeforamonth #nature #wandering #instatravel #instatraveling #asia #travelphotography #sunsetlovers #instanature #city #incredibleindia

After morning tea, cleansing, meditation, asanas, breakfast, anatomy, and lunch, we have a few hours free before evening asanas. Today, my friend, Kamal, and I decided to head into town to shop and explore. We made our way down the winding paths to Lakshman Jhula, Rishikesh's famous iron suspension bridge. While crowded with people, cows, and motorbikes, the view of the Ganges from the bridge made the trek worth it. This place gets more and more beautiful each day. #mytinyatlas #traveler #lakshmanjhula #ganges #gangesriver #himalayas #mountains #nature #bridge #view #instago #worldwanderer #instatravel #instapassport #india #tlpicks #bbctravel #yahootravelexplorers #mytravelgram #igtravel #river #beautiful #scenery #motherganga #Rishikesh #travelvibes #travelstoke

Day two of yoga teacher training is complete, and I'm realizing just how hard my body has been working. Two yoga classes a day, both an hour and a half each, on top of meditation, philosophy, and anatomy classes, can really take its toll on you. But, I love the group I am with, my teachers, and the experience. I am not sure I've ever been worked so hard physically, but it's so nice to have the proper training and really learn all that yoga involves. For the first time since I've been here, I didn't leave the school at all today, so this is another photo from yesterday. This is the view from the Beatles Cafe, which is similar to my sunset view on my first night here. I'm so grateful to be able to practice yoga here in beautiful Rishikesh. #travelstoke #tlpicks #motherganga #travelvibes #river #Rishikesh #view #beautifulview #instago #india #incredibleindia #instaindia #igdaily #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #traveler #traveling #nature #ganges #gangesriver #instatravel #instapassport #yahootravelexplorers #yogateachertraining #grateful #bbctravel #gratitude #latergram

Lakshman Jhula is Rishikesh's famous bridge. It spans 450 feet across the Ganges and can be a little hectic to cross thanks to the monkeys, cows, motorbikes, and people taking selfies (of course, I was one of them!). Still, it offers one of the best views around and is quite beautiful in its own way too. I took this photo yesterday from the entrance to a local cafe. Today, I didn't wander quite as far, and I'm grateful because tonight's yoga practice was quite intense. Each day, it gets more difficult but also easier. They push us to go further than we would on our own, but never past our limits. I've realized that I've never worked so hard for something I've wanted before and that feels really good. I want this more than I've wanted anything in a long time, and that makes the painful and difficult moments easy to work through. #yogateachertraining #Rishikesh #river #gangesriver #ganges #bridge #suspensionbridge #lakshmanjhula #namaste #thankful #livingmydream #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #tlpicks #yahootravelexplorers #passionpassport #traveltheworld #seetheworld #nature #india #instaindia #incredibleindia #instago #travelgram #worldwanderer #travelvibes #travelstoke #traveling #reflection #goals

Had the most beautiful morning watching the sun rise over the Himalayas at Shri Kunjapuri Temple. Then, we received a blessing from an Indian priest. This is my new buddy, @yachtyogi, who is beautiful inside and out. You should definitely give her a follow because when she's not practicing yoga alongside me in Rishikesh, she's sailing around the world giving tips on keeping a balanced lifestyle. #temple #traveltheworld #igdaily #friends #yachtyogi #worldwanderer #blessed #travelblogger #travel #travelers #yogis #igtravel #seetheworld #mytinyatlas #instaindia #incredibleindia #travelfriends #yogateachertraining #Rishikesh #india #instago #igers #travelvibes #travelstoke #passionpassport #instapassport #mytravelgram #traveling

The streets of Rishikesh are electric tonight, as celebrations for Diwali are underway. After dinner, I headed into town to pick up my saree, as well as a few accessories: bangles and a bindi. Then, we stopped and got fireworks, as well as sweets at a famous shop in town. The shop was full of sweets for Diwali, and we enjoyed ras malai, which I can't even begin to describe, but it was so good. I had every last drop! Then, we danced on the rickshaw back to our place and set off fireworks. I can't wait to see what tomorrow has in store! #Diwali #happydiwali #rasmalai #dessert #sweets #delicious #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #travelvibes #travelblogger #seetheworld #instago #indianfood #incredibleindia #foodie #foodstagram #eeeeeats #worldwanderer #traveltheworld #travelstoke #passionpassport #celebrations #yahootravelexplorers #holiday #india #diwali2015

Something I've been thinking about today is that in the West, we tend to treat our problems, rather than preventing them in the first place. Here, it's about staying healthy from the start by focusing on the mind, body, and soul. My anatomy classes have been invaluable in reminding me to think about what I put inside my body and the importance of eating mindfully. The vegetarian diet, plus three hours of yoga and a disciplined schedule have made me feel revitalized and energized each day. Our body truly is our temple, and it's so important that we treat it right each and every single day. #yogateachertraining #lotus #travelstoke #passionpassport #health #mindbodysoul #healthy #travelgram #temple #yoga #igdaily #india #instago #igtravel #incredibleindia #india #rishikesh #mindfulness #meditation #healthyliving #foodforthought #travelvibes #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #instaindia #namaste

I had no idea the Ganges could be so stunning. This was our celebratory pose after surviving the raft excursion. Even though it was a bit of an adventurous trip, seeing the river in its more quiet and gentle form was a special experience. The rapids were quite intense at points, but the moments when we were just floating were my favorite. Such a beautiful river, even though I didn't expect it. #incredibleindia #igdaily #india #instago #ganga #gangesriver #india_gram #travel #friends #celebration #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #travelgram #travelstoke #passionpassport #theganges #rafting #celebrate #sundayfunday #adventure #adventureisoutthere #travelvibes #travelstagram #igtravel #seetheworld #traveltheworld #river #riverrafting #nature #himalayas

Our final Sunday in Rishikesh was perfect. Finally got to sleep in a bit, had chai masala and studied in the morning, shopped all afternoon, sent a prayer down the Ganga, had a photo shoot during sunset, and enjoyed a lovely dinner out with the whole crew. It's hard to believe that this time next week, we will all be on our separate journeys, some to other places and others home. I'm glad my time in India is not coming to an end for another few weeks, but it will be hard to leave this magical place and the beautiful people I've met here, especially as it's starting to feel more like home. #reflections #Rishikesh #meditation #travelstoke #India #ganga #gangesriver #traveltheworld #seetheworld #yogateachertraining #yogalove #worldwanderer #worldcapitalofyoga #travelgram #travelvibes #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #instago #instaindia #incredibleindia #tlpicks #bbctravel #yahootravelexplorers #travelingram #igtravel #colorsofindia #growth #grateful #thankful #happiness

I'll be honest, I've shopped a lot during my month in Rishikesh, but my favorite purchase of the trip would have to be my mala: a string of prayer beads used for keeping count while chanting or repeating a mantra. There are 108 beads and mine are made up of black moonstone and sandalwood. Something drew me to them, and I was excited to learn that black moonstone (also known as labradorite) allows one to determine the form of one's goals and dreams, opening the crown chakra, while also stimulating imagination and helping with anxiety. Excited to put these beautiful beads to good use. #mala #prayerbeads #blackmoonstone #crownchakra #rishikesh #india #incredibleindia #meditation #travelgram #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #bbctravel #colorsofindia #travel #tlpicks #instago #instaindia #instapassport #sandalwood #labradorite #yahootravelexplorers #yogateachertraining #travellove #meditate #travelvibes #travelstoke #passionpassport

Yoga is a very personal journey, but it helps to have friends along with you to push you even further. It's time to say goodbye to the Indian town that has become my home over the past month and worked its way into my heart forever. Rishikesh is a magical town and the perfect place for yoga teacher certification. There are so many options to explore yourself, grow, and learn, and it would be easy to spend a few months here picking up different skills. I know without a doubt, I will make my way back to this gorgeous little Himalayan town. Now, I'm off on a little adventure before heading to Bangalore in a few days. #yogateachertraining #yogateacher #rishikesh #lakshmanjhula #igtravel #mytinyatlas #seetheworld #traveltheworld #igtravel #igdaily #india #bridge #incredibleindia #colorsofindia #journey #newpath #changes #grateful #bbctravel #yahootravelexplorers #tlpicks #travelgram #mytravelgram #ganga #gangesriver #travellove #travelvibes #instago #instapassport #passionpassport

Spent the afternoon with the sweetest boys in the world. We danced, played Uno and Carom (an Indian game I thankfully learned how to play in Rishikesh), took a ton of photos, and did some yoga, which solidified the fact that I want to teach yoga to children. The boys range from six to nineteen and were street children before they were taken in by the shelter. They've already made their way into my heart and luckily, I get to spend all of next week with them. @leaveurmarkindia #volunteer #volunteerabroad #india #kids #passionpassport #travelgram #mytinyatlas #mytravelgram #travelling #bangalore #children #igdaily #instago #instaindia #igtravel #leaveurmark #travel #travellove #travelvibes #yahootravelexplorers #travelstoke #bbctravel #tlpicks #traveldiaries #instakids #volunteering #peace #happiness

One of my favorite places from yesterday was Mysore Palace. It was the residential palace of the Wodeyars, the Maharajas of Mysore, who ruled from 1350-1950. The inside of the palace is stunning with high ceilings that are adorned with stained glass, large halls with elaborately painted columns and arches, and frescos documenting important events of the royal family. I've been to many castles and palaces in my travels, but if I was able to pick one to live in, this would be it. #travel #mysore #mytinyatlas #mysorepalace #palace #royal #bbctravel #tlpicks #yahootravelexplorers #beautiful #colorsofindia #incredibleindia #instago #instaindia #igdaily #igtravel #india #leaveurmark #myview #passionpassport #flowers #garden #worldwanderer #travelgram #travellove #travelstoke #travelvibes #southernindia

When I set out on my journey to India, I knew it was going to be a special trip, as India has been a love of mine for years, but actually seeing my dream come to fruition has been extraordinary. From my yoga studies in the north to volunteering in the south, I have seen many sides of the country, but have barely even scratched the surface of all India has to offer, and I'm already planning to return. I'm grateful for each and every moment and experience, especially the incredibly warm people I met on this adventure. India, you are beautiful. Thank you for your light and love. I miss you already and can't wait to see you again soon. #worldwanderer #yahootravelexplorers #tlpicks #temple #travelblogger #bbctravel #culturegram #colorsofindia #traveler #travel #explore #seetheworld #globetrotter #traveltheworld #travelvibes #travelstoke #himalayas #latergram #sunrise #dawn #instago #igtravel #igdaily #instapassport #instaindia #incredibleindia #mytinyatlas #passionpassport

Capturing India through Instagram was fun, mostly because of the reactions and comments I received. Often, India has a bad reputation in the West, and what I found was beauty, even if it wasn’t always obvious. India is a place I loved long before I arrived, and I wanted people to love it as much as I do. Hopefully, my Instagram helped do just that.

Spread the love

I followed your journey as best I could while you were in India so I saw many of these photos already. Still, what a treat to get to see them again! I had no idea, too, that the Ganges could be so beautiful. I think my favorite shot is the one from your second day of yoga training. It truly looks like something out of a fairy tale.

Traveling to India in a few months and I stumbled along your IG and blog. Kudos! Love reading about your experiences. Do you have any advice regarding packing for India?

    Cheers,

Hi Char! So glad you found me. šŸ™‚ Pack light for sure. You’ll be able to buy lots of cool things there (I bought a ton of pants, a saree, a salwar suit, and a kuti). I would stick to basics, things that cover your knees and shoulders for sure. I lived in a lot of leggings and tunics. Where are you traveling to?

      1. Charlene

        Hi Erin,

Thanks so much for the reply. I am looking forward to packing light and expanding upon my wardrobe while in India. We are currently making our itinerary and open to suggestions. The plan is to spend 5-6 days in Mumbai, then head to New Delhi, Rishikesh and Nepal… Currently obsessed with Nepal it looks stunning!! How many days would you recommend in New Delhi? Also, we would like to spend >1 week in Rishikesh participating in a yogi retreat. Do you have any recommendations? Ideally, I would have loved to spend a month doing a RYT training however, logistically I was only able to get a little over 3 weeks approved for vacay.

Thanks in advance for the feedback, looking forward to hearing about your recommendations.

        Cheers,
        Char
