One of my favorite aspects of having this blog is being able to share companies and products that align with my core values, Catrinka is one of them. Inspired by the documentary, Girl Rising, three friends founded Catrinka in New York City in 2013. The company aims to create ethical fashion accessories, while simultaneously employing women and educating girls.
Recently, Catrinka started including a friendship bracelet with each handbag ($50+) purchased on their website. This gift was made by the teen girls working in the Catrinka Girls Project in Guatemala and serves as a reminder of the girls who are empowered through each purchase of a Catrinka bag.
This Sunday, October 11th, is International Day of the Girl, making it an ideal time to support Catrinka. You can either purchase one of their beautiful bags and get a free bracelet, or design a custom bracelet with the words and coloring of your choice. These bracelets cost $2.50 each, but you must purchase a minimum of twenty-five. Since they must be ordered in bulk they are perfect for holiday presents or a fundraiser.
100% of the proceeds from the bracelets go to the Catrinka Girls Project, which gives adolescent girls living in Mayan indigenous communities life skills, education, and income. It also gives the girls a chance to gain experience with small businesses and opens up their opportunities.
This is an initiative that supports the importance of girls and women around the world. Girls need to be seen as equals, and this is a start. Check out Catrinka and see what they are doing to support girls and women around the world.
