Better Beauty Products for Your Body and the Environment

In my most recent post about how travel has changed me, I wrote that I want to make sure I am contributing to a better world. One of the ways I have been doing that is by becoming a more environmentally conscious consumer. While I have been slowly establishing this in every area of my life, one of my main focuses has been on the beauty products I use.

Last summer, I watched a video put out by EWG’s Skin Deep and was upset by how many chemicals are in our beauty products in the United States. Since then, I have been on the lookout for beauty products that are good not only for my body, but also for the environment. Once an old product runs out, I replace it with one of these new products. Luckily, it has been a relatively easy process and the transition has been overwhelmingly positive. I have seen a significant difference in the way my body looks and feels, and I like knowing that the products I have switched to are contributing to a better world.

While there are many products out there, these have been the ones I have been using that I recommend to everyone I know. If there are any that you use that you love, please comment below; I’m always looking to improve my beauty regime.

Caitlin’s Super Natural Deodorant

After my experiment with natural deodorants last summer, Caitlin got in touch with me because she wanted me to try the product she had created. At the time, I believed I had found a deodorant that was all-natural, but after further research, I found that there were still harmful ingredients in it. You can imagine how happy I was when Caitlin reached out and sent me her product. All of her deodorants are organic, vegan, cruelty-free, and made with 100% botanicals. They also really work, and I love the way they smell, especially after my struggle last summer. While I love them all, I took a special liking towards the Lavender and Currant.

Om Aroma & Co.

During my visit to Saugerties, New York, I took a little trip to Savor Spa, an eco-chic spa in Woodstock. This was at the beginning of my search for better beauty products, and I was thrilled to discover the spa’s company, Om Aroma & Co. After the company’s founder broke out in a rash from ingredients in a body lotion, she set out to create skin care products that were organic, as well as chemical and preservative-free. I was in need of a new face wash, so I decided to purchase the Pearl Face Cleanser, which was an immediate hit. I have been using it since my trip and my skin looks and feels the best it ever has. This is the only cleanser I’ll be using from here on out, and I’m looking forward to adding more of their beauty products to my daily routine.

John Masters Organics

After the long winter, I was looking for something that would give my hair the moisture it needed, while also keeping it frizz-free for the coming summer months. With my first use, I knew this was my new go-to product, and I’ve already recommended it to friends who feel the same way about it. With just one to three drops of the product, my hair is soft and free of frizz all day long; I couldn’t recommend it more. I also love that it can be used when hair is wet and dry, making it the only product I need to use.

Alba Botanica

Not only does Alba Botanica make products that are healthier for the people that use them, but all of their products are also 100% vegetarian and cruelty-free. While making the switch to a more natural shampoo was tough for me, Alba Bontanica made the process easy, especially because of how good it made my hair smell. I have also recently been using their sunscreen and highly recommend their products. The facial sunscreen isn’t greasy and doesn’t cause breakouts, while the spray smells like coconut and conjures up tropical daydreams. Having tried many of Alba Botanica’s products, I feel confident recommending them to anyone who is looking to change up their beauty routine.

Juice Beauty

While I discovered Juice Beauty years ago at Sephora, I wasn’t entirely ready to make the switch, though I wish I hadn’t waited so long. Unlike other tinted moisturizers I’ve used, I feel that Juice Beauty’s actually improves my skin. I’ve had less breakouts and my face is constantly moisturized throughout the day, not dried out. I also swore by their nutrient moisturizer to get through the winter. While I have only tried these products, I plan on experimenting with their other beauty products throughout the coming months.

Lulu Organics

My go-to beauty product, especially for travel, has always been dry shampoo, and I was quite worried about finding a product that was more natural and could do the job. You can imagine my happiness when the product found me. While waiting on line in Anthropologie, I found myself looking at their beauty products and the little travel-sized version of Lulu Organic’s hair powder popped out at me. It’s talc free, vegan, handmade, gluten free, and has a short list of ingredients that you can not only pronounce, but actually identify. Plus, it smells amazing and does a great job keeping my hair looking fresh when I don’t have time to wash it.

Nubian Heritage

I recently discovered Nubian Heritage at Whole Foods while looking for a travel-size body wash. I was drawn to the tropical scent, but fell in love with it once I actually used it. Not only did I smell as good as I had hoped, but it also left my skin moisturized hours after using it. Their products are also certified organic and fair trade, which makes me love them even more. I’ll definitely be purchasing a bigger bottle for everyday use and give their other products a try in the future.

Products I Recommend: Coconut & Papaya with Vanilla Beans Body Wash

While the switch from my favorite trusted products to new brands was a scary new venture, these products have been so wonderful that I have already forgotten those I’ve used in the past. I now find myself eagerly giving new brands a chance and loving the results. I believe the more aware we are, the easier it will become for us to buy healthier and more natural products; this is just the beginning.

A special thank you to Caitlin’s Super Natural for sending the deodorants for me to try and review. As always, all opinions are my own.

Spread the love

I am a sucker for bergamot. Gets me every time.

Haha, get the deodorant, Ted! 🙂

  2. lola

I love that you have gone to natural beauty products. I’m not sure I have the patience to do it myself.

    1. The World Wanderer

It was actually less frustrating than I expected. Usually, when I try new products, I either love them or hate them because I break out or am left with dry skin. I was so excited to find products that actually improved the condition of my skin the first time I used them. In fact, I recently went to a Mary Kay consultation for a friend, and they are supposed to be ranked so high in skin care, and guess what? I broke out! It was awful. So I’ll stick to these products. Glad I found them on the first shot. 😉

This is something I’ve always wanted to do but, as Lola said, I don’t know that I have the patience. I am committed to buying only cruelty-free products; I just need to take that next step. This is a super helpful resource for when I do!

I know, it’s tough. Sometimes I wait until the products run out, but other times, I just go ahead and buy the natural product. The majority of this has been easy. I swear by Juice Beauty, especially because their moisturizers actually moisturize for hours. Still, the deodorants are a lot more difficult to find because they don’t last as long as what we’re used to. Now, I’m just used to having to apply more than once on those hot days. Glad you’ll be able to use this as a resource!

We’ve moved to more natural cleaning products, but I can’t say I’ve moved to natural beauty products myself!

    1. The World Wanderer

Haha, well, the natural deodorant thing is definitely something you can look into. Yes, natural cleaning products! I’m also working on that. Crazy how bad all of this stuff is for us.

I’ve been making my own soap for years – BIG difference in the way it makes your skin feel. After closing my biz 15 years ago I will be re-launching a natural soap biz in September and can’t wait to dive back into it all!
