I rarely play tourist at home, which is what made taking the Sex and the City Hotspots with On Location Tours so much fun. They offer an overview of the filming locations of not only the television show, but also the two movies, taking guests all over Manhattan in search of all of Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda, and Samantha’s favorite spots.
After gathering in front of the Pulitzer Fountain, which is located in front of the famous Plaza Hotel, we met our guide and got on line to get on the bus that would take us to each site. I decided to take my best friend, Deanna, along with me, as much of our college time was devoted to watching Sex and the City. It was the perfect way for us to spend the day together doing something we both loved.
Once we all loaded on the bus, we were introduced to our tour guide and the places we would be seeing on the tour. On our way to our first stop, we talked about the significance of The Plaza in Sex and the City and watched a few clips that were filmed in the vicinity that we had just been standing in.
While we drove past many of the filming location on our way downtown, our first stop was The Pleasure Chest, where Charlotte bought her favorite toy, the Rabbit. Tour participants were given time to look around the store, as well as a discount on their purchase. While Deanna and I did not make any purchases, we did entertain ourselves by roaming around the shop.
After our fifteen minute shopping stop, we continued to drive throughout the city. We passed countless filming locations from the show and movies, and then watched the scenes from each location come to life on the televisions on board the bus.
Our next stop was Buddakan, the restaurant that is famous for Carrie and Big’s engagement party, as well as the last single girl kiss. While I’ve been to Buddakan in the past for dinner, it was so different to see it before it was open for business. The design is stunning, and we were able to get a real feel for the spots that were used in the filming of the movie.
After a few pictures, we then headed back on our bus and drove past the Meatpacking District on our way to Greenwich Village, home to my favorite place, The Magnolia Bakery. We strolled around the area, one that I’m very familiar with, but it was nice to have the scenes of Sex and the City in my mind while wandering around.
We got back on the bus and were given cupcakes to enjoy for the ride back to our final location. They weren’t Magnolia cupcakes, so I was a little disappointed, but they were delicious none-the-less, and we enjoyed them, while watching more clips from the show.
Our final stop was O’Nieal’s, which was the filming location for Scout, Aidan’s bar. We stopped in for a cosmo at the discounted price of $12, and it was nice to sit and relax for a bit before hoping back on the bus and ending the tour.
While we didn’t stop at each site, we were able to see so many locations throughout the tour, including Aidan’s furniture company, Charlotte’s gym, and many of the bars and restaurants that the girls frequented on the show.
It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday. Not only did I get to see all of the filming locations of one of my favorite shows, but it was also an excuse to spend some quality time with my best friend. If Sex and the City was one of your favorite shows, I highly recommend this tour. Whether it’s for a bachelorette party, birthday celebration, or just a date with your close girlfriends, this is the perfect way to spend an afternoon in New York City.
