Music Monday: Society.

Music Monday: Society.

This song is a few years old, as it was on the soundtrack for one of my favorite movies, Into the Wild. But, when it came on my playlist the other day, I felt compelled to share it with all of you. The lyrics really encapsulate the problem with society and the fact that we all want more and more, but we aren’t truly happy with what we get.

Life is about the memories we make and the people we spend our time with, but we are often so focused on the next moment, that we miss the beauty of what’s happening in our life at the present time. I know, that I have this problem too, but this song served as a little reminder that it’s not what I own, but how I’m choosing to live my life. I hope that you all benefit from the reminder as well.

Artist: Eddie Vedder

Song: Society

Favorite Lyrics:
It’s a mystery to me.
We have a greed with which we have agreed.
You think you have to want more than you need,
Until you have it all you won’t be free.

Society, you’re a crazy breed.
I hope you’re not lonely without me.

When you want more than you have,
You think you need.
And when you think more than you want,
Your thoughts begin to bleed.

I think I need to find a bigger place,
‘Cause when you have more than you think,
You need more space.

Spread the love

Oh, I wasn’t feeling the Monday blues, Farhan, I just really like the song. It’s got a great message, and it’s mellow. Plus, I love Eddie Vedder’s voice. Sorry you don’t love it as much as I do.

I don’t think I quite understood that song until I took some time off to travel for a year… I never quite realized how materialistic I had been conditioned to be until I had to fit everything I needed into a backpack (and saw firsthand how little most people around the world live with). When I came back, all I could think was, “wow…. I have so much…. stuff.” It’s a fantastic message. Plus, I just love Eddie Vedder. 🙂
