For me, 2013 is a year that will be remembered for many life changes, hardships, and triumphs. I used to think that once I found happiness that it would stay forever, but the truth is not everything lasts forever, and there are challenges ahead of us that we will always need to face. It’s as Elizabeth Gilbert says so brilliantly in Eat, Pray, Love:
“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it. You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings. And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”
It’s an exhausting process quite honestly, but those moments of happiness, however long they may be, are worth the fight. Our lives may be full of ups and downs, but I honestly believe it’s the memories of the ups that push me through the down periods.
With a month left in the year, I am determined to make it the best month I have had so far with big plans to ensure that is the case. I would like to think of it as my December to remember.
December has always been my favorite month. Not only is it a celebratory month with Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but right in the middle is my birthday. Because of this, December has always been a month about celebrating life and love. This year is no different, except to add to the excitement, I have decided to throw a few travel plans into the mix.
This month, not only do I have the usual holidays to celebrate, but also two big trips to end, and simultaneously start, the year. Two destinations are old favorites, both of which I will be visiting for the forth time. The final place, where I will end and begin the new year will be a place I have been dreaming about for years, and while it’s not my first time in the country, it is my first time in the city.
Miami is one of my favorite cities in the United States, and partially because it feels so far from home. The water is Caribbean blue, Spanish can be heard on the tip of everyone’s tongue, music blares from every corner, and the food is some of the best in the world. This year, I’ll be headed to Miami to celebrate my twenty-ninth birthday, and ring in the last year of my twenties. It won’t be a very long trip, but I am looking forward to some relaxation under the warm Floridan sun and a few cocktails to go along with it.
While I realize that I was just in London, the city keeps calling me back. London has dug its way deep into my heart, and I could make up any excuse to head back there as often as possible. After winning GowithOh‘s guest tester contest, I found an excuse to stop over to London for a few days before making my way to Barcelona. I won’t have much time in one of my favorite cities, but it will be enough to get my London fix until I return once again in July.
After London, I will be spending the last days of 2013 and ringing in 2014 in Spain’s Catalonian city. For years, I have wanted to spend New Year’s Eve in Barcelona, and GowithOh is helping me make it a possibility. I am really looking forward to wandering the streets of a new city in my final days of 2013, and welcoming in 2014, along with a new chapter in my life, with open arms.
This month is one that I am truly looking forward to, one that will allow me to finally leave the past completely behind and look forward to a bright future. I have realized that in life, nothing ever really comes easy, and there are plenty of ups and downs that come our way. The important thing is to make it through the downs while always looking forward. Eventually, the up is bound to come back again, and this December will be just the beginning of mine.
