The 4th of July seems to be a time I find myself far from home; one year, it was the day I flew to The Bahamas, another Thailand, and this year, I am in Santiago, Chile. While today many Americans are relaxing at the beach, enjoying a barbecues with friends and family, and ending the night with a display of fireworks, I am enjoying my time in South America.
Traveling during the popular U.S. holiday does not bother me. It’s nice to be away from the excitement that the holiday brings, especially because those celebrations seem to last all summer long. For now, I am enjoying exactly where I am.
But, today I will be having a celebration of my own. After a few days of exploring this city that I can’t help falling in love with, I will head outside of Santiago to Casablanca Valley, Valparaíso, and Viña del Mar with Santiago Adventures. This was an activity that I was hoping to do while visiting, and I am so excited for my little escape.
I’ll spend time wine tasting and wandering around three new areas of Chile, giving me more time to understand the country, especially the parts of it outside the city. Hopefully, it will give me more of a grasp on the people and culture, and I’ll be able to further fall in love with this country.
So, while I may not be celebrating 4th of July the traditional way, I’m pretty sure that the people of Chile will not let me down. But, to all my American friends and family back home, Happy 4th of July and enjoy everything wonderful that the day may bring!
