With St. Patrick’s Day less than a week away, I have decided to go with an Irish artist for this week’s Music Monday. I first discovered Mick Flannery in November 2011, when I went to visit my cousins and friends in Ireland for a long weekend.
That weekend, Matt, my cousin’s boyfriend, decided that he wanted to take Michelle, my cousin, to see Mick Flannery, who was playing in the town of Ballymahon. When he heard I would be visiting that weekend, he bought an extra ticket for me.
I didn’t know what to expect, but after a drink at the pub down the road, we headed to The Bog Lane Theatre, a small 68-person theater. The theater was crowded except for three seats up front, and we decided to take those. Our view was perfect, and with the first song, I fell in love with Mick Flannery.
The show was great, complete with Mick opening up a pack of beer and sharing it with the crowd. He shared stories about his life and background information for each of the songs.
After the show, we decided to follow the crowd to Skelly’s Pub. Here we drank cider and beer, and guess who else was there…Mick! Of course, I had to meet him, so I pulled him aside and asked for a photo, while my cousin, Michelle, yelled to him that I was from America. We all laughed and then I let him go back to his friends.
While I may have intruded on what could have been a lovely date for Michelle and Matt, I’d say it was a pretty special night for all of us. I got to bond with my cousin and new man, while enjoying some quality tunes. We still talk about it to this day, and I really feel that I have a special connection to their relationship because of it.
The next day, Michelle and I headed straight to the store to pick up Mick’s cd. To this day, it is still one of my favorites.
