Keeping Warm Thanks to My Athleta Base Layer.

Keeping Warm Thanks to My Athleta Base Layer.

Keeping warm is my one priority during winter, which is why I’ve never been more grateful to discover my Athleta base layer.

This year is the year of no limits, and the year that I plan on falling in love with all things in life, including winter. For years, I have hated this season, choosing hot chocolate, cozy sweats, and a spot by the heater over venturing outdoors. But, this year, that all has changed with my new outlook on life.

The only concern I had was how to stay warm, as I am someone who is constantly cold. Even the air conditioning in the summer can be too much for me, so I was a little worried about how I would enjoy my time outdoors when the cold and I are bitter enemies.

That was until I discovered how effective layering can be, starting with a base layer, something I loathed as a child. I remember getting ready to ski and putting on ugly thermals. They were always uncomfortable under my clothes, and I hated wearing them, so I stopped going outdoors unless I had to. Sounds like a stupid reason to hibernate, but I’m a little picky about what I wear; even if I am the only person seeing it.

Luckily, I have learned to shop at Athleta for all my outdoor needs, and they have some seriously cute clothes, even in terms of base layers. Clearly, they understood me and my winter-weather fashion issues. In fact, I actually had a hard time narrowing down which base layer I loved the most, but eventually their Double Dip Tights and Top won me over.

Failed jumping attempt base layer modeling.

A little pre-hike base layer modeling.

After weeks of being disappointed by warm weather, which was definitely a first, I was finally able to put my new Athleta base layer to the test this past weekend on my first winter hike; I have to tell you, I absolutely fell in love.

Not only is the pattern cute enough that it could be worn, dare I say it, on its own, but even in weather that was 23°F, not once did I feel cold; I did mention that I am ALWAYS cold, right? But, with these underneath a sweater, jacket, and Athleta’s Snow Cruiser pants, I was completely comfortable for the three-hours I spent outdoors.

Made with wool, polypropylene, and spandex, the base layer fit true to size and stayed in place while I was moving. More importantly, not once did I feel like Randy in A Christmas Story, which was my biggest fear. Honestly, aside from never feeling the cold, I barely felt like I was wearing more than one layer.

Thanks to Athleta and their adorable apparel, I was actually able to get out there and fully enjoy this weekend. Despite the chill in the air, it was a beautiful day, one that I would have missed out on had I chosen to lock myself indoors. Maybe falling in love with winter won’t be as hard as I thought, especially since I’ll get to look good no matter how cold it gets.

A special thanks to Athleta for helping me tolerate the winter by letting me sample their base layer. As always the opinions are my own. Did I mention that I am considering wearing these at all times for the rest of the winter? Because I am.

Spread the love

I bought several pieces from Athleta when I went to New Zealand last winter. Not only were the tops warm, but I was the most fashionable person hiking the Fox Glacier. 😉 I needed some of those bottoms for skiing in Switzerland last week. I’ll be going back, so maybe I can catch them on sale.

Isn’t their stuff the best? I brought so much of it to Africa. I think the top and bottoms are on sale now, and I definitely suggest getting them. 🙂

Glad to hear you out enjoying the winter weather! A great base layer makes all the difference. Kudos to going out for your photo shoot with no socks though – my poor feet are burrowing deeper into the blanket as I read!

I think I lost my mind…I had this vision…one that didn’t work! Oh, well, either way, it wasn’t my wisest move. At least the rest of my body was warm! 🙂

Oh, they would’ve been perfect for Switzerland! It may be warm now, but get a pair just in case. I can see it staying cold for a while before spring decides to show up.
