Drinks on Ice: A Visit to an Ice Bar in Nha Trang.

Drinks on Ice: A Visit to an Ice Bar in Nha Trang.

Winter is something I am learning to love, but lately all of this talk of ice and snow has made my mind wander to somewhere a bit warmer: Vietnam. Not because I’d prefer to be on the warm beach there, although it would be nice, but because it was where I had my first opportunity to visit an ice bar.

Nha Trang.

Nha Trang.

During our second night in Nha Trang, Michelle, Linda, and I were hoping to find a new bar to start off the evening. On our way from dinner at Good Morning, Vietnam to our new favorite bar, The Sailing Club, we stumbled upon Ice Bar and made our way inside.

I remembered reading about an ice bar in Nha Trang, so I assumed this must be it, but when we walked in there were groups of people sitting around in a bar that looked like it was made of ice. It was deceiving, but we found a group of travelers to talk with, and decided it was a good place to at least have a drink.

While chatting, I was still interested to discover if there actually was an ice bar, or not. I decided to ask the bartenders, since after mentioning it to the other travelers, they seemed clueless, and I discovered that indeed there was a tiny room upstairs that held inside it…an ice bar!

All at once, I was no longer crazy, and everyone we were with cheered and ran upstairs as fast as they could. And, with the heat in Vietnam, there’s no wonder we were excited to chill out a bit.

Upstairs, we found a rack of coats; not the luxurious fur coats I always imagined being decked out in while in an ice bar, but they’d at least keep us warm.

We got on our gear and headed inside the small room, and were thrilled at what we found.

Along with walls and a bar made of ice, there were benches, tables, and a few strange sculptures that included mushrooms and a person. Clearly, many photos needed to be taken to document our experience.

Though, after some time, the cold got to us and the newness wore off, so we ditched our red robes and headed to the next bar. Overall, it was quite a fun experience, and I would do it all again in no time, though sleeping in an ice hotel is really the next goal on my list.

Have you been to an ice bar? If so, where? If not, do you want to go?

Love the fancy red coat at the ice bar! Still mystified by the fact that the ice bar is in Vietnam! Not where I would picture it – more of a nordik novelty!

Haha, thanks, Anita! Such a funny place for an ice bar. 🙂

I’m gutted that I didn’t know about that when I was in Nha Trang!

Went to an ice bar in Auckland a few years back, Minus 5. Cool experience, well I guess more like a cold one haha. Enjoyed hanging at the bar and the cocktails themselves in the ice glasses. Was a hot day though, so the glasses disappeared soon after leaving the bar. 🙂
