Cape Cross Seal Colony: Photo Essay.

Cape Cross Seal Colony: Photo Essay.

Of all the activities I was excited for in Africa, visiting the Cape Cross seal colony in Namibia was one I was truly looking forward to. For years, I had loved seals and the way they gracefully swam in the ocean. One of my favorite movies growing up was Andre, the movie about a girl who adopted a pet seal. At the time, I thought she had the best life, and I was ready to cart myself to Maine to find my own seal to adopt.

But, as we came closer to the colony, many of the other tour members didn’t seem to share in my excitement. Apparently, the smell of the seals was hard to handle. Still, I couldn’t believe that something so cute could smell so bad.

That was until we arrived in Cape Cross, an absolutely beautiful location, but it didn’t take long for the smell to hit our noses. Then came the noises.

It was completely the opposite as I had imagined. Sprawled out across the and swimming in the ocean were thousands of seals. The animals I had once thought were beautiful, were instead loud and aggressive; they were the epitome of lazy.

In this case, looks are very deceiving, still, I managed to snap a few photos where the animals do appear quite cute. Just try not to imagine the smells…
