Thoughts on Turning Two.

Two years ago, I set out with a plan: to share my love of travel with others. After several attempts to find the right host site and name, I finally set up The World Wanderer to document my travels, and I haven’t looked back since.

Two years after beginning, my blog has become more than I ever could have hoped, and it has brought me to people I would not have met otherwise. In just twenty-four months, I have connected with so many people all around the world, and have not only been able to share my stories with them, but I have been able to read about and listen to their adventures, as well. These people have become friends over time, and have shown me more about myself than I ever could have imagined discovering on my own. I know that over time, I will continue to grow with them, and along the way, I know I’ll meet even more people.

While many of these people I have only met through social media or at different travel events, plenty of new friends were also made abroad. Without my blog, I am positive that I would not have discovered Gecko’s Adventures, therefore never having taken the chance to see Africa on my own. The decision to take that trip took a huge leap of faith, but I would hate to imagine my life today if I hadn’t taken the chance to live my dreams.

New friends in Africa.

New friends in Africa.

Along with meeting new people and making new friends, I have been lucky enough to add six new countries to my list since October. And, as always with travel, because of my opportunities to visit new places, I have made several discoveries about myself and the world. With each trip I take, I continue to grow, as was the case this year.

Finally, I have begun to see my own country as a place to discover. No longer do I push aside the beauty of my own country for “greater” places abroad. While, I do believe I will continue to travel a lot outside of the United States in the coming years, I am realizing just how beautiful the country that I grew up in is. By taking on new activities, I am beginning to finally appreciate all I have taken for granted in the past.

This past year has taught me a lot about myself, and being able to share that with my readers has been quite the experience for me. I believe the real purpose of my blog is to show people, of any age, sex, ethnicity, and nationality, that no matter what path you choose to take in life, you should be in control of your own destiny. If you choose to see the world, rather than conforming to society’s standards, it does not make you lost.

I may have chosen a path that is quite the opposite of many of my friends and family members, but I do believe that it is what has made the difference in my life. Travel, and my discovery of the world, is something I know that I will never regret.

What’s in store for the next year? As the typical wanderer that I am, I have no idea what the future holds, but I am looking forward to seeing how I continue to grow, as a writer, a traveler, and as a person. I hope that you continue to follow me to see what adventures lie ahead.

Spread the love
