Chocolate, beer, waffles, french fries and mussels. What more could one ask for in a city? In my eyes, Brussels was absolutely perfect. Three years ago, my best friend, Lara, and I stopped over in the Belgian city to visit friends on our way from Dublin to Amsterdam. What I didn’t realize at the time was how quickly I’d fall in love with the city.
Brussels was never on my list of places to visit. I thought maybe one day I’d get there, but it wasn’t a priority. So, when Lara mentioned she had friends living there, it became the perfect stopping point before moving on to Amsterdam. I had no expectations, which is maybe what made everything about the trip so memorable.
While we may have only spent about twenty-four hours in the city, on very little sleep, we tried to experience it to the fullest extent, and we made sure to experience what I like to call the best of Brussels.
To this day the moules-frites I had in Brussels remains one of my favorite meals. On the menu at many restaurants, it’s easy to find and absolutely delicious. You cannot leave Brussels without having this dish.
Have a drink at the Délirium Café. Here you can sample one of their 2,004 beers from all over the world, each with their own special glass.
Visit La Grand-Place and admire the beautiful architecture. Then stop in a few of the stores to shop or find a café for a something to eat.
See Manneken Pis, the city’s famous statue. While he may be smaller than you imagined in your mind, you cannot leave the city with at least one glimpse and a silly picture.
Stop in Le Cerceuil and drink Belgian beer from a skull mug at a coffee table made of coffins. It is an experience unlike any other.
Finally, be sure to stock up on chocolates! We bought ours at Leonidas and tried to make them last for weeks upon arriving home…easier said than done.
Even though Lara and I only had twenty-four hours to explore the city of Brussels, it was easy to make the most of our time there. So whether you have twenty-four hours or a week in Brussels, be sure these are on your to-do list.
