Day 26: BootsnAll Indie Travel Project

Today’s Prompt: PhotoPost a photo of your favorite place and tell us what you love about it.

A View of the Adriatic

On the island of Cres, in tiny town called Štivan, at the end of a long and winding road on a pebbled beach lies the Adriatic Sea. One of my favorite places in the world is this beach in Croatia. It’s secluded and serene, and to me, it is the perfect place to spend a summer morning.

Croatia was another world to me when I visited with family in 2006. It was the realization of another side of who I was and where I had come from. The history of my family came alive for me here – the house my grandfather grew up in, his relatives’ homes, their abandoned olive oil factory and olive trees. After the oppression left from World War II and Communist rule of the country, my grandfather fled, and eventually, no one was left to take care of the property.

The country has changed quite a bit over the years, especially those long after my grandfather left. But, his niece and nephew go back each year to take care of the house and keep connections with the neighbors and family who stayed Croatia. Being able to visit was an absolute treat, and something I had always hoped would happen.

The lifestyle was relaxing and our days were spent enjoying life slowly, the way it is meant to be. We slept late, headed to the beach to swim and sun bathe, ate light lunches of wine, bread, pršut, and cheese, took naps in the afternoon, walked around town in evening after dinner, and then headed to bed early exhausted from il dolce far niente, the sweetness of doing nothing.

Life in Croatia may not have always been easy, but in the days where war is a memory, the people of Croatia know how to enjoy life. They even have a name for it, pomalo, which means relax, or take it easy, and it is a word that more countries need to take into their vocabulary.

Spread the love
