Summer is the ideal time for getting away, whether you’re traveling by train, plane, boat, or automobile, one thing is certain – a play list is a necessity. From many road trips with my friend, Lara, around the U.S. to navigating the back roads in New Zealand with my cousin, Michelle, to 2.5 hour flights to Miami or 21 hour flights to New Zealand,my i-Pod has helped me along the way. No matter what layovers or delays came my way, I was prepared and content because of my music. This is why I’ve complied a list of a few of my favorite songs for traveling.
This list changes with time and I always update it before a trip, but this list includes a some of my all-time favorites and a few more recent additions. Enjoy!
Elton John – Tiny Dancer
Ryan Adams – Wonderwall
Lissie – In Sleep
Ray Lamontage – Beg, Steal, Borrow
Arcade Fire – Wake Up
The Avett Brothers – I and Love and You
Florence and the Machine – The Dog Days are Over
The Shins – Caring is Creepy
Plastiscines – Barcelona
Sufjan Stevens – Chicago
Mumford and Sons – The Cave
Regina Spektor: On the Radio
Santigold – L.E.S. Artistes

Ingrid Michaelson – Everybody
The Black Keys – Tighten Up
The Smiths – There is a Light that Never Goes Out
Metric – Gold Guns Girls
Scars on 45 – Give Me Something
If you are driving, these songs are great to listen and sing along to, however, you may need a couple songs to keep you awake . Here are a couple I’d pick:
Stromae ft. Kanye West and Gilbere Forte – Alors on Danse (Remix)
Martin Solveig & Dragonette – Hello
LMFAO – Party Rock Anthem
Don Omar & Lucenzo Ft. Daddy Yankee, Arcangel – Danzo Kuduro (Remix)
Afrojack ft. Eva Simons – Take Over Control
Rihanna ft. David Guetta – Who’s that Chick?
Duck Sauce – Barbra Streisand
Discobitch – C’est Beau La Bourgeoisie
Edward Maya – This is My Life
As for plane and train rides, my list is relatively similar, though I try to download a new album, one I haven’t listened to fully. If I know the lyrics to songs, I will stay up throughout my entire ride dancing along, but if I make sure they are new songs, then I can listen while also using the time to sleep. For my 21 hour trip to New Zealand, I downloaded Heart Full of Soul by Krishna Das. The chants are not only easy to fall asleep to, but they also ease any travel stresses you may come across. With so many distractions to keep me awake on the plane, listening to this album has now become a tradition of mine to get some sleep while traveling.
No matter where you are traveling to or how you get there, make sure you have a good play list to get you through whatever your travels bring your way. If you come across delays and traffic or livestock in your path, you’ll be grateful you thought out your play list before you left. Trust me.
